The original South African Prisons Service flag was taken into use in 1986. It was inaugurated by the then Minister of Justice, Mr Kobie Coetsee, at a parade in Pretoria on 14 February 1986, as part of the SA Prisons Service's 75th anniversary celebrations.  The flag was registered at the Bureau of Heraldry with Certificate number 1442 on 27 April 1984.

The colours of the badge should be the same as shown below i.e. with silver protea flowers, silver lifebuoy, and gold edges to the book.

National Colour (1992 - 1994)

The Department had two National Colours, i.e. the former National Flag (1928-1994) in Colour format. They were presented by the then State President, F.W. de Klerk, in Pretoria on 27 August 1992.  On 23 June 1993, the Minister of Correctional Services, Adriaan Vlok, handed them over to the DCS training college in Kroonstad. Presumably they were laid up prior to the adoption of the new national flag in April 1994.

The introduction of the National Colour by the South African Defence Force was approved on 08 March 1988.  The South African National Colour was the National Flag with the following characteristics:
- it was manufactured from silk;
- it was fimbrated with a gold frill; and
- it had two gold cords with tassels hanging from the bottom of the cords.

A total of 128 Colours were awarded between April 1988 until December 1993.
