Adopted 30 July 1964
The municipal chamber approved the flag by resolution no 701 of 30 July
1964. The colors are blue, white, and black. Blue and white come from the
flag of the State of Rio de Janeiro, while white and black are from the flag
of the Swiss canton of Freiburg, symbolizing the immigration from that
locality. The coat of arms recalls the local topography by the river (in
base), the origins of the city from the properties of the Baron of Nova
Friburgo (his arms), the ethnic origins of the settlers from Europe (the
arms of Freiburg) and the notable figures in the
history of the city. The dates on the scroll are 1818, the year in which
King Dom João VI authorized the coming of the first colonists from the
canton of Freiburg, and 1890, when Novo Friburgo was elevated to the status
of a city. The colors in the coat of arms stand for strength (gold),
serenity (blue), abundance and wealth (green), candor and purity (silver),
and intrepidity and courage (red).
