Description of coat of arms:
In a red field is a golden(= yellow) demi lion issuant placed upon a torse of alternating red and golden (= yellow) elements.
Meaning:
According to source the lion might be alluding either to the Welfen kin or to the counts of Lauenrode, who also used a lion and ruled the village until 1248.
The demi issuant variant had been chosen arbitrarily as a distinction to the numerous other arms also having a Welfen's lion.

The coat of arms was approved to the municipality in 1949 by Lower Saxonian minister of interior. The city rights had been gained later in 1959.
