Coat of Arms

Description of coat of arms:
The shield is divided per pale. The sinister side shows a golden (= yellow) annulet flnked by three silver (= white) stone spindles. The dexter side shows in a golden (= yellow) field a red coat divided by a silver (= white) sword. The silver (= white) chief is divided by a black centred cross.
Meaning:
According to source the cross is symbolizing the archbishopric and electorate of Köln. The other fields are simplifications of the former arms of the municipalities of Büttgen and Kaarst. The annulet with spindles is taken from the arms of the van Werth family. Its most famous member, Jan van Werth, a general of cavalry in 30-years-war, who fought for the Catholic cause, could be seen in the former arms of Büttgen , having mounted a horse. Coat and sword are attributes of St. Martin, whose image had been in the former arms of Kaarst.
