Rob Raeside at Washington Flag Conference ICV 24 - 2011 (Photo by Emil Dreyer) |
Rob Raeside - Wolfville, Nova Scotia, Canada I was born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1955, and grew up in rural Ayrshire, passionate about Geography, before going to study Geology at Aberdeen. Waiting for the boat to sail to a geological posting in Antarctica, I embarked on graduate studies in Canada where I discovered (a) that graduate degrees cannot be done in 9 months, (b) how much I enjoyed teaching, and (c) that Canada was cold enough for me. Following degrees at Queen's University and the University of Calgary, I accepted at teaching position at Acadia University, in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, where I have remained since. |
[Rob is the FOTW Director and responsible for everything else, and a constant inspiration for all of us. - Ed.]
Rob is also one of many graphic artist who contributes to FOTW on a regular basis. There are now more than 470 examples
of his work on FOTW. Here are a few favorites:
Drawing flags has never been a primary goal for me, however if one is needed, and not available on FOTW, the best way
to deal with it is to go ahead and draw it. I work in CorelDraw, which I picked up back in version 3 in 1990, and still enjoy
its versatility and practicality even in version 17. Most of the images attributed to me on FOTW are likely modest recoloured
or adjusted images, sometimes taking a photograph and simply "“flattening it out", sometimes using a graphic element
like a small coat of arms, and rewriting the enveloping text, and occasionally redrawing the flag completely based on a high
resolution photograph.
