Presentation of SOCATRA

Quoting the SOCATRA website:

The Société d'Armement et de Transport, SOCATRA, was incorporated, under French law, in 1977, with its head offices and top management located in Bordeaux.
Shipping remains one of the three main activities of SOCATRA, which diversified its operations in 1992 when it began acquiring and operating oil storage facilities in various areas in France. The company obtained, in 1999, the opportunity to establish a position in a new segment of the tanker industry as a ship manager.
Its tankers are adapted to the transportation of crude oil, refined oil products and asphalt. At present, the SOCATRA Group runs a fleet of 15 vessels ranging from 6500 DWT to 277,000 DWT, under French, Luxembourg and The Saint Vincent and Grenadine Islands flags. The majority of the ships are chartered by the major oil companies and operate all over the world.

Gironde is the only ship of the company whose name recalls Bordeaux, whereas most of the fleet bears Breton names (Elven, Kergoat, Kerlaz, Tréguier, Fouesnant, Kerfons, Tugen, Kermaria, Faouet, Guildo).

According to Brown's Flags and Funnels of Shipping Companies of the World (1995) [lgr95], the house flag of SOCATRA is horizontally divided in seven horizontal white-red-white-blue-white-red-white stripes, in apparent proportion 7:1:1:1:1:1:7, with a white hexagon outlined in red and charged with a blue S in the middle of the flag.
