The municipality of Dugi Rat (7,305 inhabitants in 2001, 3,507 in the village of Dugi Rat proper) is located along the coast, between Split and Omiš.
Dugi Rat is part of the Poljica region, situated to the south and east of Split and north of Omiš, along the coast and inlands encompassing the Mosor mountain. Since the 13th century the region had a high degree of self-government, as the Republic of Poljica until its fall with Napoléon's conquests. Unlike the better known Republic of Ragusa, located further south, which was aristocratic in character, Poljica was a peasant's republic. According to some theories, Thomas More's Utopia was partially based on the society in Poljica; although this may be a bit far-fetched, there are certain similarities between his ideas and determination of the Statutes of 1440. In western sources, the region is better known under the Italian name of Poglizza.

The symbols of Dugi Rat (municipal website) are described in the Municipality Statutes Statut Općine Dugi Rat, adopted by the Municipality Assembly on 12 October 2001 and published on 2 October 2001 in the Municipality official gazette Službeni glasnik, službeno glasilo općine Dugi Rat, No. 2.
The symbols were approved by the Ministry of Administration.
The symbols were designed by Dijana Nazor, who kindly provided original drawings, used to produce the images shown on this page.
The flag (photo) is in proportions 1:2, blue with the coat of arms, bordered yellow, in the middle. The Statutes, however, describe the coat of arms bordered green.

The coat of arms is red with a bracera, a traditional sailboat used in Eastern Adriatic, with a single mast with a Latin sail on a crossbar. It may also be propelled by oars.

The first modern symbols of Dugi Rat wre prescribed by Decision Odluka o grbu i zastavi općine Dugi Rat, adopted by the Municipality Assembly on 21 November 1996 and published on 23 December 1996 in Službeni glasnik, službeno glasilo općine Dugi Rat, No. 3 (text).
The flag is in proportions 1:2, white, with the coat of arms in its top left corner.
The coat of arms is described as shield-shaped, divided into two parts by two golden wavy lines, symbolizing the sea. The chief is white and includes St. George on a horse, representing the Poljica Republic, and in the base of blue is a bracera, symbolizing Lower Poljica.
It seems clear that this design could not pass the criteria of the central authorities and it was probably soon replaced with the current design. However, in the official gazettes available online there is no any other Decision issued to supersede the 1996 Decision.
