Flags of Croatian universities

The symbols of the Croatian universities are presented in the article Grbovi i zastave hrvatskih sveučilišta (The coats of arms and flags of Croatian universities), by Ivan Dodig (Herzegovina University, Međugorje; text) and Željko Heimer (images), published in Grb i Zastava, No. 14, November 2013.

The Croatian universities use their symbols, which are mostly seal-shaped, often circular, and, although the universities themselves call them "coats of arms", have no heraldic character and cannot be considered heraldic coats of arms. Most of the symbols contain inscriptions in Croatian and/or Latin. In the academic tradition, each university has also an official Latin name. Generally, no colour is prescribed for them, except for their use on flags. The university flags are mostly monocoloured, often matching the colour of the town's flag. As a rule the symbols are prescribed in the Statutes of each university.
