The city emblem and the flag were adopted on Jul 4th 2006 by Notice No 66 and
70. The white flag has a green and a red two color city emblem in the center.
The city emblem is a stylized kanji 喜 Ki of Kitakata. The red color stands for a
creation of the history and the tradition, the green color for a harmony with
the nature and the coexistence. It represents an image of the citizen who seeks
for a rich and healthy farming mountain villages and a vigorous life, a tourist
city and freely jumps into the bright future. It also represents a soar of
the city and the citizen. The flag proportion is 2:3. The height of the emblem
is 3/5 height of the flag.

[Editorial note: source pages no longer available]
The stylised hiragana ki き forms a circular shape with points at
the top and bottom, and wings ("airfoils"?) at the top. The 'wings' represent
progress, while the circle represents harmony/reconciliation.
The light orange colour is literally "skin colour".
