The city emblem was adopted on Jan 10th 1937 but there is no flag law. The maroon flag has a white and a blue two color city emblem in the center. The city emblem is a stylized kanji 太 O of hitachiOta in  a form of a crane. It derives from the fact Ruler Satake family in Warring States period built Maizuru Jo meaning a castle of a dancing crane.
