The flag was adopted on Aug 1st 1969 by the city Notice No 40.
The flag proportions are 2:3.
The green flag is charged with a white city emblem in the center which is a stylized
hiragana KU く.
The round shape represents Kumamoto city which respects unity and develop vigorously to the future on
the basis of the harmony of the people.

The brown flag was abolished and the new emblem and the flag were adopted on
Jan 15th 2005 by Notice No 184 and 185. The maroon new flag has a gold city
emblem in the center. The city emblem is a stylized kanji 山 Yama of Yamaga in a
form of Yamaga garden lantern. It represents a wish for the traditional city to
inherit the tradition to shine itself in the future as well. The flag proportion
is 2:3.
