Description of the flag

White stylized Katakana character of Ku (ク) of Kumamoto on wine red colour field. The emblem expresses a map of Kyushu island in white a part of which is Kumamoto. Adopted 23 July 1966.
Nozomi Kariyasu, 6 May 1998

This mark was created by taking the first syllable of "Kumamoto" ("ku" in Japanese letter) and combining it with the geographical features of Kyushu. The white circle [??? - Jo.] in the center symbolizes Kumamoto prefecture, which is located in the center of Kyushu.
Johannes Weigand 27 February 1998
