The municipality of Češinovo-Obleševo (in Cyrillic, Чешиново-Облешево 7,490 inhabitants; 132.2 sq. km) is made of the 14 villages of Banja, Burilčevo, Vrbica, Žigance, Kučično, Lepopelci, Novo Selani, Obleševo, Sokolarc, Spančevo, Teranci, Ularci, Češinovo, and Čiflik.
Obleševo is the administrative seat of the municipality. The merging of the two former municipalities of Češinovo and Obleševo was not so peaceful. Quoting MILS News, 22 February 2005:With 55 votes for and one abstained the Parliament yesterday adopted the changes in the Law for territorial organization according to which there is going to be one municipality under the name Češinovo-Obleševo, and the HQ of the municipality will be located in Obleševo. The opposition abstained from voting and left the session prior to the voting. The MPs from the ruling majority did not accept the amendment submitted by the MPs from VMRO-National, Zarko Karadzoski and Cedomir Kralevski, which proposed that the two municipalities should continue to exist as independent ones, and after four years it should be evaluated which of the two municipalities has shown better results and which one should merge toward the other municipality. Karadzoski yesterday stated that the proposed solution by the Government will not reduce the tensions because it is obvious that the citizens from Češinovo and the citizens from Obleševo do not want to live in a joined municipality. The Minister of Local Government, Rizvan Sulejmani, stated that the amendment could not be accepted due to the fact that the two municipalities as independent municipalities would not be able to meet the citizens' demands.
As Channel 5 TV reports, the decision reached by the Parliament, which states that the HQ of the new municipality will be located in Obleševo, caused considerable revolt among the citizens who have for 20 days been blocking the road Štip-Kočani. The citizens yesterday burned the national flag as well as their party's membership booklets. Last night the blockade on the Štip-Kočani road was removed which allowed normalization of the traffic conditions. The citizens from Češinovo announced press conference for today, on which they will express their standpoints.
According to Dnevnik, the representatives from the local Government of Češinovo announced that they will challenge the Parliamentary decision in the Constitutional Court and will react at all authorized institutions. The Board for protests of Češinovo last night should have held a meeting to decide on the further activities.
As Channel 5 TV reports, the Ministry of Local Government yesterday sent a letter to the citizens from Češinovo stating that the continuation of the blockade will not help solve the problem but only cause bigger damages to the region. The Ministry of Local Government yesterday proposed referendum to be held in the 14 settlements of the municipality Češinovo-Obleševo after the local elections, on which the citizens will decide the future of the municipality. The Ministry promised to respect the decision from the referendum.
Yesterday the Ministry of Interior stated that it will press charges against those who had burned the national flag at the blockades in Češinovo.

When still an independent municipality, Obleševo had
5,071 inhabitants in 2002 and an area of 82 sq. km.
The flag of Oblesevo, as shown on the Macedonian Ministry of Local
Self-Government website (page no longer online), is red with an emblem clearly derived from the Sun of Vergina, but with only eight rays.
