Hieslum village

Hieslum had (1958) 120; (1974) 79 inhabitants, divided into Atseburen and Idserdaburen. There were several small lakes on the territory of this village, NE of Workum city. The old dike (Hieslumerdijk, an extension of the Dedgumerdijk) was dug up and is now used as a rural road.
Nickname: "Poelboaren" (puddlewaterers), "Roeken" (rooks) - the cattle got their water from the puddles around the meadows; rooks refers to black clothed devote people (or not so devote, but there is no pub in the village, not even a church).
Flag: per hoistdiagonal white and black; on white a red waterlilyleaf; at the hoist the narrowed municipal flag.
adopted 1955; design: Kl. Sierksma
