Coat of Arms

[Flag of Haugesund]

The coat of arms was approved with the royal resolution of 9 May 1914 and drawn by Andreas Bloch. [c2j87] mention no flag and it may be a later invention of local administration. As usual for the older coat of arms [c2j87] provides no offcial blazon. The English blazon may be something like: or a Viking ship sable with a sail paly gules and argent under a whale embowed.
The Viking ship displayed in the shield is meant to represent the Gokstadskipet - the Viking ship that was excavated in 1880 making an international archaeological sensation at the time. (See e.g. http://www.gule.tv/2015/03/gokstadskipets-gule-og-svarte-skjold.html)  The whale states the leading role of Sandefjord in whaling industry - that was the major town's industry since 1905.
Apparently, Sanderfjord was recently joined with Stokke and Andebu municipalities and there is consideration of adopting a new joined coat of arms, see e.g. the presentation http://www.sandefjord.kommune.no/globalassets/nye-sandefjord/rapporter-etc/oslosamling_kommunevapen-en-presentasjon.pdf,

also http://www.sandefjord.kommune.no/Politikk-og-innsyn/kommunesammenslaing/siste-nytt/
(although this link may change soon)
I don't think that these and other links at the municipal site mention anything on the history of the current flag, but I may have not brawsed long enough.
