Blazon: I gull tre røde liljetopper forent i trepass. In Engish: Or three
fluer-de-lis in pall stems conjoined.
Approved by the royal resolution of 22 May 1987 after a drawing by Einar H.
Skjervold. [c2j88]
The explanation of the design provided on the
municipal
web site is that the "background" for the choice of emblem was the "red
lilly" or "Nøkkrosen" ("Nøkkerosen" is Norwegian for water lilly). While the
lilly is more usually white, in certain areas of the municipality red variant is
more common. It is, of course, stylized in traditional heraldic way.
The
http://www.ngw.nl/heraldrywiki/index.php?title=N%C3%A6r%C3%B8y provides
other reason, beside the water lilies, for the choice of lilies: "The arms are
based on the seal of King Håkon Magnusson from 1344, on a document in which the
King granted several rights to the local farmers. The seal shows the St. Mary in
a portal decorated with fleur-de-lis, the symbol of the St. Mary."
There is also 8 page of
documentation regarding the adoption process. It started in 1977 with a
competition producing 48 design in 1978 - most unapprovable for not following
strict Norwegian municipal heraldic rules. The idea was renewed in 1987 on the
occasion of 150 anniversary of municipality. The municipality engaged Skjervold
from Trondheim to make an approvable design. He made three variant design
in two nackground versions (argent, or) as well as proposals for a flag and a
seal. There is also a essay on linking the red fleur-delis with the "Nøkkrosen"
identified as "Nyphaea candida f. rosea".
