It is a fairly untypical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a quartered field (town rank) red and yellow.

The arms are Or two sheep Sable garnished Argent passant respectant and in chief a cross of the Christ Knights' Order and in base a wine mill wheel Gules. Mural crown Argent with four visible towers (town rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "PROENÇA-A-VELHA".

Proença-a-Velha Commune is one of the 13 communes of Idanha-a-Nova Municipality (q.v.); it had 282 inhabitants in 2001 and covers 57,75 km². The name of the town means Old Provençe (there is also a new one), probably after settlers from there after the Moorish period, but nothing on the arms refers to this connection, the red and yellow flag, matching the Occitan flag and one of the two Provencean flags, but that, derived from the charges as it is, is unlikely intentional.
