Zeeland

Houseflag of N.V. Stoomboot Maatschappij "Zeeland", Vlissingen. Zeeland Shipping Company - Harwich-Vlissingen.
Houseflag: blue, with White St. Andrew's Cross, and Gold Crown in center.
Image from "The dumpy book of ships and the sea" (ed. Henry Sampson, published by Sampson Low, London, circa 1957).
James Dignan, 17 Oct 2003

The Mij. Zeeland, officially the 'Koninklijke Nederlandsche Postvaart" (Royal Dutch Mail Company), was in charge of the ferry Hoek van Holland - Harwich for over 100 years.

The Dutch ‘Maritiem Digitaal’ data base shows the actual flag: just enter ‘rederijvlag’ in the search box and start the search with images only: Page 10 shows results 234 and 237 the latter of which is preferred as the item is larger: 96 [cm] x 148 [cm]. Zoom function! Never mind the mysterious ‘Title’, this is a faulty translation.  In any case the object in question belongs to the Amsterdam Maritime Museum and bears catalogue no. S.6872(094) whereas Hendrik Veder (“creator”) is a sail manufacturer founded in 1800.

Zuid Amerika Lijn

Zuid Amerika Lijn image sent by Cees Schuller, 3 Jan 2010

Do you know anything about the ZAL (Zuid Amerika Lijn - South America Line) a predecessor of the Kon Hollandsche Lloyd. Was there a houseflag? I'm sending an image of a uniform-button along.
The ZAL existed between 1899-1908. On 19 July 1899 the Zuid-Amerika Lijn (ZAL) was founded in Amsterdam. It got into trouble by several mishaps. The Nederlandsche Handel-Maatschappij helped solve these problems by starting a stronger company combining all activities of the ZAL. That was the NV Kon Hollandsche Lloyd (KHL), founded on 15 January 1908.
Cees Schuller, 3 Jan 2010

As the ZAL existed 1899-1908 it ought to be present in [LLo04] which is the 1904 (first) edition of Lloyds Flags & Funnels.  I have no access to this book but now at least the house flag's design is known.

Zuid-Hollandsche Scheepvaart Maatschappij

Houseflag of N.V. Zuid-Hollandsche Scheepvaart Maatschappij, Rotterdam.

Zuid Hollandsche Scheepvaart Maatschappij N.V. This format of the white band lying wholly on hoist and fly is supported by Wyt's Digest of 1960 but various Brown and Talbot-Booth editions show it centred on the respective corners. The company appears to have come under the operations of Rederij Theordora B.V. in the early 1970s and possibly used their livery thereafter before disappearing from the scene at the end of the decade.

Zwaak

[Zwaak houseflag] image sent by Jan Mertens, 3 Sep 2009

Another firm mentioned in Jansen & Van Herck’s ‘Duwvaart’ (1922), however briefly, is Zwaak presented as related to Smit International featured on pp. 88-94.  Zwaak was founded with a view to operating lash barges, LASH meaning “lighter aboard ship”.
However the oldest vessel mentioned on the ‘Binnenvaart’ site, belonging to ‘Zwaak & Zn’ (i.e. Son) at Rotterdam dates from 1927, the oldest belonging to ‘Zwaak Rivier & Duwvaart bv’ (i.e. Zwaak River and Push Navigation) - as the company is called in above book - dates from 1964.  An intermediary stage may have been ‘Zwaak Jr bv’. Further information was gleaned from discussion forums where we learn that Smit took over Zwaak in 1975 as ‘Smit-Vos-Zwaak Rivier en Duwvaart’, Rotterdam.

Shown in Jansen & Van Herck in b/w, the house flag was blue with a white diamond bearing a red initial “Z” without serifs. Direct link to coloured image shown on ‘Binnenvaart’.  As a matter of interest, see this page for the funnel: moving the mouse over the first camera logo (end of page) will make a b/w photo appear where the Z touches the diamond’s edges.  No photo of flag found yet.
