The Republic of Chile is divided into 15 regions, numbered 1-12 and 14-15 in Roman numerals. The number XIII is not assigned, and the capital region Santiago is designated with RM for Regional Municipality. Each region is further divided into provinces, which are themselves divided into Communes (municipalities). The following table includes only those Provinces and Communes for which F.O.T.W. presently has data.

I published also in my Bulletin nº 6
[frp] several regional
flags provided by official autorities from Chile, including
some photos of flags (two of them with the intendent at side
of the flag). I have photo of, at less, four regional flags.
I know that three o four regions don’t have adopted flag
until now but many of them adopted flag in the last years.
Also some provinces used banner or flag. Bacchi, member of
Argentine vex asociation found some
province (the info is available now to several vexilologist),
and the governor of Copiapo posted to me photo of the
provincial banner (publised in my Bulletin 3)
[frp].

This
text on line implies that all chilean communal arms include a
golden mural crown with four visible towers.

An official on line document intitled
División
Politico Administrativa y Sistema de Gobierno y
Administración says i.a.
that each region is administered by an Intendente.
Each province is administered by a governor (Gobernador, exec.)
submited to the respective Intendente.
Each commune is administered by a commune (communalidad),
a collective body consisting of a mayor (Alcalde) and a council
(Concejo). Some of these officials are entitled to
Naval rank flags when aboard a
naval vessel.

Not only regions and municipalities,
but provinces too do have flags in Chile, but the use does
not seem to be widely spread.
Olivier Touzeau, 17 Aug 2006
Part of the Constitutional Reform prescribes “special territories”
(territorios especiales); Rapa Nui will be the first of these,
according to the website
of the Chilean TV channel "Canal 13".
